Gaza fishermen, farmers come under Israeli gunfire

GAZA, Saturday, May 21, 2022 (WAFA) – Fishermen and farmers in the Gaza Strip today came under Israeli gunfire forcing them to leave their areas seeking safety, reported WAFA correspondent. He said that Israeli soldiers stationed at a military watchtower east of Gaza City opened gunfire and fired tear gas canisters at farmers working in their lands forcing them to leave the area. In Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip, soldiers opened fire at shepherds east of al-Qarara town, who also had to leave the area to avoid being hit. Israeli navy boats also opened fire at fishermen sailing in the south of the Gaza Strip forcing them to leave the area and return to shore. No one was reported injured in any of the incidents. Israel does not allow landowners and shepherds to be in the open pastures and lands near the border fence and tries to create a buffer zone at the expense of the Gaza lands. Fishermen also are not allowed to go deeper than six nautical miles into the sea in the south of the Gaza Strip and only three nautical miles in the north. But even then, fishermen are still attacked even if they stay within their marked zones. The Gaza Strip has been under tight Israeli sea, land and air siege since 2005. Israel controls everything that enters or leaves the Gaza Strip. M.K.
